The Brydens from Scotland to Illinois via England

Most all I know about the early Bryden family is from Census Records, sometimes confirmed by pictures, sometimes the information may be wrong. Scottish people tended to name their children with old family names, sometimes mother's maiden names. You might see a child named Agnes Hay Hay, for instance. But on the other hand I never found any connecton to anyone named Hope, Honeyman, or Ramsey.

There are hundreds of James Brydens around. My great-grandfather James Bryden was born about 1851 in Tinwald, Dumfrieshire, Scotland. In the 1871 census he was an apprentice in Dalry to a blacksmith named Kerr. Agnes Hay's mother's name was Kerr. I think that is their connection. In 1881 James was a smith at a foundry in Kilmarnock, where Agnes had been born. Their children were born in Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbright, Ayrshire, and then Bolton, England. I do not believe I have any pictures of either James or Agnes.

Between 1905 and 1910 the entire family moved to Macoupin County, Illinois. They were coal miners, though many of them worked in warehouses or stores instead. James A. Bryden had asthma, and after he married they moved to Denver, probably because of the asthma. He could not find regular work, and moved back and forth between Illinois and Colorado until the mid-1920's.

James Bryden parents are unknown.

Agnes Ramsey Honeyman Hay Bryden: parents were Robert Hay (1823-, Penpont, Scotland) and Jean Kerr Hay (1830-, Closeburn, Scotland)... Siblings were William, John, [Agnes], Thomas, Robert, David. Born in Tyron and Kilmarnock, Scotland.

The Bohlens from Germany to Illinois

Henry Bohlen came to the U.S. from Hanover, Germany, in about 1867. He was an engineer in the coal mine. He came to the U.S. with his father and brothers. He married Mary Schloman, a second-generation local girl, in Mount Olive, Illinois.

Hinrich Ellen "Henry E" Bohlen's parents were (I think) Elde Bohlen (1833-) and Trintie (1840-), both from Germany.

(Christina Anna Maria "Mary A" Schloman's parents were Friedrich W. Schloman (1833-1866) and Maria Nagel Schloman (1838-1890, born in Mt. Olive, Illinois). Maria Nagel's parents were from Prussia.
